Misuse of Police database

21 November 2018

In May 2018 Police conducted a random audit of an officer's use of the Police database in the month of March and found that during that month he had searched for information about one of his family members.

A further audit of his use of the database over approximately a two year period found 97 instances of inappropriate searches.

Police began a formal investigation into the officer's conduct which was overseen by the Authority. The officer retired from Police prior to that investigation concluding.

Police have advised the Authority that security measures designed to enable earlier identification of inappropriate use of the database may be considered and implemented.
